Soft-close hinges: where the money is actually worth it

A modest 3BHK swallows sixty to ninety cabinet hinges. At the gap between a normal hinge and a soft-close one, that's a five-figure decision hiding inside a line item most people skim.

The honest answer isn't "soft-close everything" or "soft-close is a scam". It's that soft-close is worth it exactly where hands touch a door daily, and wasted everywhere else.

Worth it

• Kitchen shutters — opened several times a day, every day, usually with full hands.
• Wardrobe doors in the rooms people actually sleep in.
• Any shutter a child can slam.
• Bathroom vanities, where slamming plus damp loosens screws fastest.

Not worth it

• Loft and storage shutters opened twice a year.
• Utility and servant-room cabinets.
• Anything behind another door.
• Back-of-house units nobody sees or touches.

Split the order. Soft-close the kitchen and the main bedrooms, normal auto-close everywhere else. On a 3BHK that usually saves several thousand rupees with nobody ever noticing.

The specs that actually matter

Overlay is the one people get wrong. Full overlay means the shutter covers the cabinet side completely; half overlay is for two shutters sharing one partition; inset means the door sits flush inside the carcass. Order the wrong one and the shutter physically will not line up — this is the single most common hardware return.

The other two are easy. 35 mm is the standard cup diameter, so almost any hinge fits a standard boring. And for corner or splayed cabinets you need an angled hinge — an 8° crank — which people only discover after the corner unit is already built.

Cheap soft-close vs good soft-close

The damper is the part that fails. A cheap hydraulic hinge starts strong and gets sloppy — within two years the door drifts shut instead of closing, which is worse than never having had it. Better hinges integrate the damper into the cup and are cycle-tested to 50,000 opens.

If the budget is tight, the smarter move is fewer soft-close hinges of a good brand rather than soft-close everywhere in the cheapest thing available.
